Homework at Dovercourt
The purpose of homework is to support the learning that takes place in the classroom. It may be given to reinforce lessons taught during class or to give students extra drill in areas where they need practice.
Parental support and interest has a large influence on students' attitudes toward homework, however homework is the child's responsibility. It is up to the child to bring it home, do the work and see that it gets back to school. This helps to teach a child to follow directions, start and complete work on time, and to be self-reliant.
How Much Homework is Appropriate? The amount of homework varies according to many factors, including: grade level of the child, time of the year, overall achievement of the child, ability to finish work during class time, courses the child is taking, and whether special projects have been assigned. If you find that your child consistently requires more than the suggested amount of time to complete homework, you should contact his/her teacher to discuss the matter.
Though the amount of homework will vary from day to day, students should not be expected to do more than the following:
|
Kindergarten - no formal homework (read to your child as much as possible) |
|
Grade One - 10 minutes in addition to home reading |
| Grade Two - 20 minutes in addition to home reading |
| Grade Three - 30 minutes in addition to home reading |
| Grade Four - 40 minutes in addition to home reading |
| Grade Five - 50 minutes in addition to home reading |
| Grade Six - 60 minutes in addition to home reading |
